My work falls into three main categories:

Flowers:  I love flowers and enjoy photographing them in any season.  Many of the flowers I photograph are grown in my front yard which gives me the opportunity to capture them in different types of light.  My neighbors enjoy them as they bloom and I like to capture their beauty to share with others long after they have faded.

Places: The subject matter is often places I regularly frequent, places where I can enjoy the tranquility of nature in its simplest form, mostly near the ocean or ponds.  Many of the scenes are done in the earliest hour of daylight, when the calm of a summer night is still evident.

The human form:  My work in this area is often a play of light as it reflects on the body, either from direct light or reflections from water.  Placing a human form in nature is always a challenge, and often relies on the ingenuity of the model.  Indoors, I like to place the figure in untraditional poses, letting light and shadow play with each other, sometimes challenging the viewer to think about what it is they are viewing.

I am basically self-taught, having taken some adult education courses and photography workshops.  Most of my “education” is from just doing what I love to do.  Currently, the internet is a prime source of new knowledge, a place where I can find information to pursue new techniques, materials and methods to produce a final print. I also served as a member of the Somerville Arts Council (2003 – 2006), which allowed me to participate in the planning and conducting of many community events including ArtBeat, the Illuminations Tour, the Union Square Affair and also the reviewing of applications and the awarding of annual fellowships and grants to area artists.
